Shout Out to the Norwalk Mentor Program – Celebrating National Mentoring Month!

Over the summer, Carmen (Anamilena’s Mentee of 3 years) was invited to the Black and Brown Girls Movement by attending the H.E.R. Summit (Healing, Empowerment, Resilience), by the Governors Prevention Partnership. Anamilena’s mentee was asked to be a panel speaker and was the youngest on stage! It was a one-day event empowering BIPOC girls 12-17 and their mentors of any age and race. It launched the Black and Brown Girls Movement, promoting connectedness for the next generation’s well-being.

January is National Mentoring Month; a time to honor the incredible contributions of mentors who are shaping the future of young people across the country. One standout program making a tremendous impact is the Norwalk Mentor Program, which is a school-based mentoring program. Jesse & Anamilena of our Backbone Staff are mentors in the program and Anamilena is a member of the Norwalk Mentor Program Advisory Board.

The impact of the program cannot be overstated. Mentors provide young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed. These relationships empower youth to overcome obstacles, pursue their dreams, and make better decisions as they navigate life’s challenges, as this aligns with the goals of our Social Emotional Health Initiative, which is to connect young people to develop more healthy and trusted relationships, especially with adults.

The Norwalk Mentor Program is always looking for new mentors to join this important work. Your involvement can make a world of difference to a young person in need of support and guidance. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a mentor, now is the perfect time to get involved. Your unique experiences, perspectives, and skills are exactly what these young individuals need to help them thrive.

Let’s continue to celebrate the power of mentoring and encourage others to get involved in this rewarding journey. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
